Does it get easier to take a stand for Christ as we get older?
I don’t know of any statistical evidence for or against this question, but to me it seems that as we age in the faith, multiple factors might make it easier to take a stand for Christ, such as:
(1) We’re not so worried about peer pressure
(2) We’ve seen more of what God has done
(3) We understand the weight of our confession
(4) The cost of what that stand might mean against us is not as concerning
As we age in the faith and understand more fully the spiritual disciplines of Bible Study, generosity, witnessing, faithfulness in worship, and fellowship, the world has less of a grip on us than when we were younger and less mature. Things that were once more important fade and the glory of eternity becomes a more-present force for change in our lives.
Persecution hurts, no matter the form. When there is the reality that we might suffer some type of loss because of the cause of Christ, we must pray for greater maturity in the faith, so as to combat the urge to let the pull of the world win, and our confession and stand be put off till another day.
Let us always pray for those in persecution’s grasp, no matter how small or large it is. When even one person collapses under the threat of ridicule, estrangement, financial loss, emotional turmoil and distress, bodily pain, or death, the Kingdom of God loses an opportunity to gain ground. Those who are young and those who are young in the faith are the most vulnerable. May the Lord give us the heart to raise these people up in prayer, for they are not just the future defenders of the faith, but they are on the front lines more than we know right now. Amen.
